Through a series of conceptual studies, a more compelling and usable navigation panel was developed for Scimagix's SIMS web interface. The existing logo's simple and playful style became the foundation for the style of the icons we ultimately arrived at.

We carried the geometric shapes into the other elements of the interface which created a consistent appearance that reinforced the branding of the company and product.

Usability and the user's environment were given top priority in this interface revision. The older SIMS navigation didn't give adequate feedback about which section the user was in. Now, the highlighted orange button shows, at a glance, where the user is. The environment for SIMS is typically in a scientific laboratory. The users analyze slides of graphical data that can be monochromatic or very colorful and rich in pattern. To reduce visual distraction, we created an interface that is clean, monochromatic and quiet. The navigation panel can be moved to the side, to widen the user's content area.

Design meetings and iterations were done to find a layout and style that met the requirements of the user interface engineers, the management, the programers and the marketing team.
